Research on Visual Perception Wins 2012 Eppendorf & Science Prize18.04.2013

The US scientist, Marlene R. Cohen Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuroscience and the Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition at the University of Pittsburgh has won the 2012 Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology. Dr. Cohen uses the response of groups of visual neurons to estimate which part of the visual world an animal is paying attention to at any given moment. The Portuguese scientist, Tiago Branco M.D., Ph.D., Postdoctoral Research Fellow at University College London has won the 2011 Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology for his research on dendrites. His work shows how dendrites discriminate temporal input sequences and apply different integration rules depending on input location. These findings give insight on how the brain performs the computations that underlie behavior, and suggest that even single neurons can solve complex computational tasks.

Eppendorf AG and the world-renowned journal Science are now accepting applications for the 2009 Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology.

The prestigious Eppendorf & Science Prize for Neurobiology is an annual international research prize of US $25,000. It is awarded to one young scientist for his or her outstanding contributions to neurobiology research based on methods of molecular and cell biology. Researchers who are 35 years of age or younger are invited to apply by June 15, 2009. The prize winner is selected by a committee of independent experts in the field, chaired by the Editor-in-Chief of Science.
